MASON CITY, Iowa — The overpass on 12th Street Northwest in Mason City is a very busy place, and now it’s the backdrop for some Union Pacific employees who are trying to get some sleep. Near the overpass, there are cars, trains and construction noise, so it’s not exactly a good place to get a good night’s rest. But the UP workers, who are in Mason City for mandatory training, cite budgetary concerns for not paying out of their own pocket to rent a hotel room or apartment. Union Pacific has refused to pay for housing in spite of the mandatory training.
