NEW YORK — Union Pacific plans to run its railroad with nearly 3,000 fewer workers this year, CEO Lance Fritz tells the Wall Street Journal, as it pushes ahead with a new operating plan that runs fewer, longer trains. The company plans to reduce its average number of workers by about 8 percent in 2020 after reducing staffing by 11 percent in 2019. It averaged nearly 42,000 workers during 2018, 37,500 during 2019, and only 34,500 during the fourth quarter of 2019.
