COLUMBUS, Neb. — A Union Pacific spokesman says two rail lines damaged by a train derailment in Columbus are set to reopen.

UP spokesman Mark Davis says about 240 feet of damaged track have been replaced and scheduled to reopen Friday evening. Repairs also are under way on 1,200 feet damaged on a second mainline that’s set to reopen by 7 a.m. Saturday.

A train struck a piece of heavy equipment in a rail yard and derailed around 8:30 Thursday night. Two locomotives and 22 cars left the tracks.

The incident sent an equipment operator to a local hospital for observation. Crew members also were treated and released.

Davis said trains were moved around the derailment Friday and some were detoured through Kansas.
