OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Railroad is making infrastructure improvements in Iowa by investing about $13 million in the rail line that runs between Boone and Westside. The project is in progress and is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. The 66-mile project includes replacing more than 64,000 ties, spreading 31,700 tons of rock ballast to help provide a more stable roadbed, renewing the surfaces at 74 road crossings and replacing a total of three miles of rail in various curves.
Meanwhile, the railroad is investing $11 million in Illinois along the rail line that runs between Nelson and near Manlius. The project is in progress and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. The 22-mile project includes replacing the rail and eight switches – the machines that move a train from one track to another.
