OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Corp., the country’s biggest railroad operator, said Tuesday it elected President and Chief Executive James R. Young as chairman, effective Feb. 1.

Current Chairman Dick Davidson is retiring effective Wednesday, the company said.

Young has served as president and chief executive since Jan. 1, 2006. He has served as president and chief operating officer of Union Pacific Railroad since 2004.

Union Pacific shares rose $1.34 to $96.90 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
