NEW YORK — Union Pacific says its second-quarter earnings rose 19 percent as continued productivity improvements offset the effects of rising fuel costs and Midwest floods.
The company earned $531 million, or $1.02 per share, compared with $446 million, or 82 cents per share, a year earlier.
Revenue rose 13 percent to $4.57 billion, from $4.05 billion in the 2007 second quarter.
The results have beat estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Financial, who expected profit of 92 cents per share on revenue of $4.51 billion.
Shipments of agricultural products jumped 29 percent, leading growth in five out of six business segments.
Automotive was the only segment to fall in the quarter, down 9 percent.
