(Union Pacific issued the following news release on January 30.)

OMAHA, Neb. — During the Faster Freight Cleaner Air Conference taking place this week in Long Beach, Calif., Union Pacific announced online availability of its “UP and the Environment” white paper. This document outlines Union Pacific’s environmental efforts and provides details on the company’s operations.

“Union Pacific continues to take significant steps to improve and protect the environment, using a combination of new technology, operational changes and new equipment,” said Bob Grimaila, Union Pacific’s vice president- environment and safety.
“The ‘UP and the Environment’ white paper is a quick and easy way for people within and outside the transportation industry to learn about Union Pacific’s environmental programs and initiatives.”

For example, many people may not realize that Union Pacific has the most environmentally friendly locomotive fleet in the nation. And, that railroads — which deliver many of the goods people use in their homes everyday — are one of the most environmentally friendly modes of freight transportation carrying everything from food products to lumber used to build homes and apartments.
