OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Corp. plans to cut jobs from its customer service center in St. Louis, reports a wire service.

While the railroad declined Monday to specify how many employees would be affected, labor union officials said 110 jobs will be cut.

Union Pacific said earlier this year it would move as many as 700 jobs from its St. Louis operations to Omaha upon completion of its new $260 million headquarters under construction.

The company has made changes in its St. Louis customer-service operation and now needs fewer workers, railroad spokesman John Bromley said.

Customer service employees were told of the company’s plans in meetings last month.

All 110 people to be laid off are represented by the labor union, said Larry Shields, vice general chairman of the Transportation Communications International Union.

There are about 520 UP customer-service employees in St. Louis, he said, and they generally make around $41,000 a year.
