MARTINEZ, Calif. — Union Pacific Railroad will pay ten-thousand dollars in fines because of oil leaks from a service yard at Suisun Bay.
Federal officials say the railroad agreed to pay the fines as a result of an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA began looking into operations at Union Pacific’s yard in Martinez after getting reports that rain was washing oil from contaminated soil into a storm drain.
In addition to the fine, the EPA had previously ordered Union Pacific to produce a plan for preventing further spills and to clean up the site.
The railroad uses the yard for maintenance and refueling of engines.
