OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Corp. agreed to pay $400,000 and admit violating federal environmental laws to settle a California case.
Union Pacific agreed last month to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for discharging wastewater contaminated with oil into the Los Angeles River on two occasions in 2001.
The Omaha-based railroad disclosed the settlement in a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.
Both discharges were related to Union Pacific’s Taylor maintenance yard that it operated in Los Angeles. A total of about 350 gallons of contaminated wastewater went into the river.
Union Pacific will pay a $200,000 fine and pay $200,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
