(The Associated Press circulated the following report on March 26.)
CARROLL, Iowa — Union Pacific Railroad workers were to begin cleanup early Friday at the site of a 22-car derailment near the unincorporated community of Maple River Junction, two miles west of Carroll.
All 22 cars were loaded with coal.
No injuries were reported and no non-railroad property was damaged in the derailment, which occurred on a straight grade along an uninhabited gravel road Thursday night.
The cars that left the tracks were near the middle of the eastbound freight train, which had stopped and was blocking the crossing in Maple River.
In the past year, several trains have derailed in the Carroll area.
