(The Associated Press circulated the following story on August 5.)
CARLETON, Neb. — A Union Pacific Railroad coal train carrying a load from Wyoming to East St. Louis derailed here early Thursday and then was struck by a westbound train.
Company spokesman Mark Davis said two crew members of the eastbound train suffered minor injuries in the accident that began with the first derailment of 37 cars about 12:45 a.m.
Davis said the first train derailed near Carleton, 29 miles northwest of Fairbury in southern Nebraska.
The westbound train hauling freight from East St. Louis to North Platte then hit the derailed car, derailing three locomotives and 27 cars.
No hazardous materials were on either train, and rail traffic was detoured to other lines until cleanup and rail repairs could be made, he said.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation
