DES MOINES, Iowa — Officials are investigating a train derailment in east Des Moines that caused a brief scare for a neighborhood.
Seven cars of a Union Pacific train went off the tracks around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
UP spokesman Mark Davis said five cars were empty and two were filled corn syrup.
No one was hurt and no spills occurred, but residents reported a hearing hissing sound.
A neighborhood block was evacuated while officials checked it out. They determined the hissing was coming from air hoses that connected the cars. Residents were allowed to go home within an hour.
The train was bound for Kansas City, Mo., from Wisconsin.
