OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Railroad employees will be cutting down and transporting the enormous Christmas tree to be displayed this year at the Durham Western Heritage Museum in Omaha.

This year’s tree is a 40-foot blue spruce donated by the Novotny family.

Employees will begin working at 8 o’clock in the morning Monday to cut down the tree and take it to the downtown museum.

The Union Pacific tradition began more than 75 years ago. This is the 16th consecutive year the tree has been cut down locally.

Before 1991, UP employees would cut Omaha’s Christmas tree from along the railroad right-of-way in the Pacific Northwest and transport the tree to Union Station.
