OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific says it is making more than $6 million in improvements to its rail line between Kansas City and Jefferson City in Missouri that should improve efficiency and reduce delays at rail crossings.

The Omaha-based company says the rail corridor between Kansas City and St. Louis has seen a rapid increase in growth in recent years as shippers sending more freight across rail lines.

The project will remove and install more than 10 miles of rail in various curves along the route. Work was to begin Sunday and be completed by April 8.

Union Pacific says it plans to spend $2.8 billion in 2009 for capital improvements along its 32,000-mile rail network.

The company said the project will affect some Amtrak trains operating between Kansas City and St. Louis.
