GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Union Pacific officials are investigating the cause of a train derailment that forced five cars of a 100-car coal train off the tracks in Grand Junction.

The train derailed at a rail yard about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Three of the five cars tipped over and spilled coal on the ground, while only the wheels of the other two cars were knocked off the tracks. No injuries were reported.

More than 400 feet of track were damaged and would have to be replaced, the railroad said.

The track was not a part of the main line and the derailment would cause only minor disruptions, officials said.

The train was en route from Bowie to Kentucky.
