SANTA FE, N.M. — Union Pacific, which has twice delayed plans to build a giant rail complex in Dona Ana County, expects to move forward with the project this year.
Gov. Susana Martinez said the deal is contingent on the Legislature eliminating New Mexico’s tax on locomotive fuel.
A bill supported by Martinez cleared the House Transportation and Pubic Works Committee in less than five minutes Thursday.
Richmond said Union Pacific’s expansion would create nearly 3,000 jobs during construction and approximately 600 full-time jobs. Work on the complex, estimated to cost $418 million, would begin this year and continue through 2014.
