GIBBON, Neb. — Union Pacific Railroad has spent about $1.13 million on 119.26 acres east of Gibbon since December, but U.P. officials aren’t talking about their plans for the area.
“We are always evaluating the capacity on the railroad and the ability to move trains efficiently,” Mark Davis, director of corporate relations and media for U.P., said in an e-mail.
Although U.P. declined to describe why it is purchasing land near Gibbon and how the land will be used, residents who sold property to the railroad described a project that will use an elevated rail and would ease passage of trains through the Gibbon area.
One man who sold land to the railroad said U.P. representatives told him the company plans to add track between two existing tracks to allow trains to pass one another without stopping. Part of the new construction will allow one train to travel on an elevated track above another train.
