PHOENIX, Ariz. — Union Pacific Railroad says it is restarting track improvement projects in California and Arizona that were put on hold because of the recession.
The railroad says it will spend about $18 million by the end of the year to add a second track along 18 miles of its main east-west Sunset Route, half in Imperial County, Calif., and half in the Phoenix area.
More double-tracking projects are planned for 2011.
Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific has been working to install a second set of tracks on the 760-mile main line between from El Paso, Texas, and Los Angeles for years. The company has double-tracked 292 miles of the line since it merged with Southern Pacific in 1996.
