GOLDEN, Colo. — A freight train derailed near the foothills west of Denver on Thursday, sending one rail car down to the highway about 25 feet below.

There are no reports of injuries.

The 94-car Union Pacific train was crossing a bridge at the entrance to Coal Creek Canyon when eight empty cars derailed. Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says a grain car fell to Colorado 72 below.

The highway was closed to traffic in the area, but Union Pacific expected to have the car removed from the road by Thursday evening.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the train derailed.

The incident happened one day after a coal train derailed in Colorado Springs.
