ABILENE, Texas — A train derailed Tuesday in downtown Abilene, leaving two cars overturned and forcing the evacuation of some homes and businesses for several hours.
Nobody was hurt.
Abilene officials said a tanker hauling a flammable substance was involved in the accident, but it did not leak.
The accident around dawn involved two cars of a Union Pacific freight train, said Pam Percival, a spokeswoman for the city of Abilene.
She said one car was hauling a low-grade fertilizer which had no real risk to the public, but that the second car was hauling liquid ethylene, which can be flammable.
UP crews uprighted the two cars and worked to move them to a safer location.
