RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A malfunctioning Union Pacific train dumped an estimated 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel Monday night over about 11 miles of track between Banning and Palm Springs, officials said.
The train stopped but continued to leak fuel, a news release from the governor’s office of emergency services stated.
The 11-mile stretch of track included some areas over water, the release said.
The spill was reported to authorities about 9:45 p.m., the release showed. An environmental contractor to Union Pacific was going to the scene, the release said.
