OMAHA, Neb. — The Environmental Protection Agency wants Union Pacific to pay tens of millions of dollars in a lead clean up project, but on Monday UP filed a strong objection.

UP said it did lease the land to Asarco — one of the lead smelters responsible for the lead contamination, but the railroad also said that lease ended in 1946 and Asarco ended up buying the land.

Union Pacific said it intends to fight the EPA in the courts.
