(The following story by Eric Anderson appeared on the Albany Times-Union website on December 9.)

Vermont’s rail program manager said Tuesday his state plans to continue subsidizing Amtrak service.

Robert Ide said that while the subsidies had been among the cuts considered as the state tries to close a budget gap, “we’ve decided not to do it.”

Vermont subsidizies the Ethan Allen Express north of Albany-Rensselaer, paying about $1.2 million annually.

“We think the way the revenues from the fares split makes (the arrangement) fair,” Ide said. “Would I like to pay less? You bet.”
