NORTHFIELD, Minn. — A volunteer who was serving as a brakeman during a small-gauge railroad demonstration is dead after a caboose tipped over and fell on him.
The Rice County Sheriff’s Office says 68-year-old William Paget of Savage jumped off the rear of the caboose and tried to keep it from tipping when the caboose fell on him yesterday afternoon near Northfield. Authorities say three adults and five children were in the caboose.
The caboose was the only rail car attached to the engine as it rounded a curve. Authorities say the caboose was traveling at less than walking speed when the accident happened.
