ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Virginia Railway Express resumes normal service Monday.

Rail service for thousands of commuters and travelers along Amtrak’s Eastern corridor had been disrupted after a CSX freight train derailed in Alexandria (website – news) earlier this month.

VRE ran on a limited schedule last week while tracks and switches were repaired.

About 13 cars of a CSX freight train from Richmond to Philadelphia came off the tracks in Alexandria, about ten miles south of Washington.

VRE won’t have any service New Year’s Day, and the limited schedule returns for one day on Friday. Passengers may encounter delays up to 15 minutes until all repairs to the derailment site are completed.
