CASTLETON, Vt. — Amtrak will now stop in Castleton, Vt., for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Agency of Transportation is switching the Ethan Allen train’s daily stop between Rutland and Albany from Fair Haven to Castleton, according to the Rutland Herald.

Transportation officials say the state hopes the change will increase ridership from Castleton State College and Lake Bomoseen areas.

According to Amtrak, 2,582 riders got on or off trains in Fair Haven in 2008. The number has increased since 2004 but is still a small percentage of the total number of riders on the Ethan Allen.
