NEWARK, N.J. — When a proposed Hudson River rail tunnel project gets criticized by the President, is given a poor rating by regulators and seems to be stone-walled by agencies holding the purse strings, what’s left for the people who support it to do? Fight back like Rocky. At least that’s the strategy of supporters of building a new Gateway Tunnel under the Hudson River and a two-track Portal bridge replacement project over the Hackensack River in Kearny. Gateway development Corporation officials spoke to the Star-Ledger editorial board last week about how they’re countering a rash of setbacks.
