SOUTH AMBOY, N.J. — A woman was fatally struck by a New Jersey Transit train after she walked around a lowered crossing gate and tried to cross the tracks, a wire service reported.
The accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. Monday, shortly after the 32-year-old woman had been dropped off at the South Amboy station by her uncle. She was struck by a westbound train as she tried to reach another train that was headed to New York, authorities said.
Her uncle, who witnessed the accident, became very distraught and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The woman’s name was not released because some family members had not been notified of her death.
The train that struck the woman had departed from New York and was headed toward Long Branch with about 700 people aboard, said Penny Bassett-Hackett, an NJ Transit spokeswoman. Those passengers were later transferred to two other trains and continued on to Long Branch, she said.
