HO-HO-KUS, N.J. — According to the Associated Press, a woman holding her baby daughter leaped in front of a commuter train Wednesday and was killed, but the 6-month-old girl survived, officials said.

The baby was in fair condition at Hackensack University Medical Center, hospital spokesman Brian Thompson said.

The sole witness, the train’s engineer, said the woman jumped from the platform in front of the locomotive as it was stopping at the station about 25 miles northwest of New York City, according to NJ Transit spokesman Ken Miller.

The woman was identified as Deborah Kahn, 33, of Ridgewood.

The baby was pulled from beneath the train by a crew member of a second train that arrived from the opposite direction several minutes later, Miller said.
