ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A train headed to a rail yard struck two track inspectors Thursday, killing one and critically injuring the other, officials said.

Metrorail, the Washington area’s transit system, identified the worker who died as Leslie A. Cherry, a 29-year employee from Maryland. The injured employee, who began working for the transit system in April, was not identified.

The two employees were ”track walkers” and were doing routine inspections, Metro officials said.

Mark Rosenker, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the workers knew they were on an active track.

The train was not carrying any passengers. Both the NTSB and Metro were investigating the accident.

Cherry was the second death this year and the 14th in Metro’s 30-year history.
