After intelligence gathered at Osama bin Laden’s compound raised fears of a terrorist attack on America’s trains, Senator Chuck Schumer called for Amtrak to embrace airport-style security measures, such as a “no-ride” list. Sen. Schumer said he would get the appropriations process going soon, and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, while declaring Amtrak perfectly safe, responded by saying he would look into the senator’s suggestions.

So far nothing has come of Schumer’s bluster. But some believe that if airport-style security does make its way into train stations around the country, it will do more harm than good.
