CASPER, Wyo. — U.S. railroads are laying off workers in response to seasonal fluctuations and the economic downturn.

But the two main railroad companies operating in Wyoming say their cuts will have little impact in the state.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas said there are no planned layoffs at its Casper location, which mostly moves freight.

He said there should be little change in the Powder River Basin where BNSF ships coal.

Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange said the bulk of that company’s cuts would likely be spread among its five other freight divisions. UP’s coal transportation division is still holding strong.
