Brother Stephen G. Brown, a member of BLET Division 56 (West Colton, California) was killed in the line of duty on September 8, 2022, while working for the Union Pacific Railroad near Mecca, California. He was 67 years old. Brother Brown was working in helper service assisting a train up a grade. When he made a reverse move into Bertram siding to put his engine away, the crew had a head-on collision with cars parked in the siding. Also killed in the accident was conductor Zachery Lara, a member of SMART-TD. Brother Brown first joined the BLET on September 1, 1995.
