NEW YORK — A Boston-bound Amtrak train was stopped and searched by police in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday because of a suspicious note, a spokeswoman said.

Authorities have been on higher alert for suspicious activities on trains since the March 11 Madrid train bombings and security is tight before the U.S. political conventions in Boston next week and New York in August.

Amtrak spokeswoman Marcie Golgoski said the Washington, D.C.-to Boston train resumed its journey after the train was searched and passengers questioned. No one was arrested, she said.
