JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A trial run for new, tighter security for rail travelers could mean a longer commute for New Jersey riders starting today.
The Homeland Security Department is working with New Jersey transit officials to test the ten (m) million dollar explosives detection system. Over the next three weeks, authorities will use the system to screen commuters going through a Port Authority terminal outside New York.
The system is similar to what’s already being used in the nation’s airports.
For now, officials say the checks are voluntary. Authorities say better security is needed at rail stations in the wake of Nine-Eleven, along with last year’s London bombings.
